Ashen Reach

A 16-bit platformer set in a sun-bleached 1950s atompunk wasteland. It is a full re-theme of Thornwake: new art, story and audio on the same engine.

The game

You play Cass, who crosses the wasteland to bring Wren home. Wren has been taken by the Signal, a lonely caretaker AI left over from before the war.

There are 40 levels in five regions: The Outskirts, The Sludge Flats, The Broken Highway, The Freeze and The Reach. The game has 13 enemies and four salvaged weapons.

There are no energy timers, and the game plays offline.

One engine, two games

Ashen Reach keeps Thornwake’s engine and mechanics and replaces the art, story and audio. Of its 57 scripts, 55 are identical to Thornwake’s.

That is the point of the shared engine: a second game needs new content, not a new codebase. Like Thornwake, Ashen Reach was built with AI agents, and its art uses AI-generated assets.

Where it is now

Ashen Reach launched on Google Play on 29 September 2026 and has passed 1,000 downloads. It is available on Android only.

  • Cass crosses an underground level above glowing green mutant hounds
  • Cass runs through a ruined 1950s town as a mutant hound charges
  • Cass on snowy steel platforms in The Freeze, with a giant mutant fly overhead
  • Story scene: Cass faces Wren as film reels gather around them
  • Map of The Reach, one of the five regions, with its levels still locked
